Does Abortion Hurt?

When it comes to abortion, there’s a lot of confusion out there. It’s common to wonder, “Do abortions hurt?” It’s a valid question, and the answer isn’t the same for everyone. Pain depends on your body, your pain tolerance, and how far along the pregnancy is.

Understanding Abortion Types: Chemical vs. Surgical

There are two main kinds of abortion: chemical and surgical

  • Chemical abortion (the abortion pill) uses medications like mifepristone and misoprostol. The FDA has approved this method up to 70 days from the first day of your last period

  • Surgical abortion is a procedure performed in a medical facility to remove pregnancy tissue. These are usually done after 10 weeks.³

How Painful Are Abortions?

So, do abortions hurt?

The experience varies from woman to woman.

  • With medical abortion, some describe it as cramping and bleeding similar to a heavy period, while others report more intense pain.

  • With surgical abortion, anesthesia prevents pain during the procedure itself, but cramping or discomfort may follow.

In general, the later the pregnancy, the more physical pain you may feel.

What are the risks of abortion?

As with any medical procedure, abortion carries risks. These may include:

  • Heavy bleeding or infection

  • Incomplete abortion requiring additional care

  • Accidental injury to surrounding organs (in later-stage surgical abortions)

  • Reactions to anesthesia

It’s also important to know that the abortion pill is not always effective—you could remain pregnant. That’s why an ultrasound is critical beforehand. It confirms the pregnancy and evaluates for possible miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening if untreated.⁴

Emotional Impact of Abortion

Abortion affects more than just the body.

Some women feel relief, while others may struggle with grief, sadness, or guilt afterward.⁵ These emotions are normal, and support can help. Talking with a trusted friend, family member, or post-abortion counselor may bring clarity and healing.

Is Abortion Legal in Louisiana?

Since the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade, states now set their own abortion laws.

In Louisiana, abortion is banned in nearly all cases.⁶ Exceptions exist only when the mother’s life is at risk or in very limited medical emergencies. It’s important to know that treating an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage is not considered abortion—those are necessary medical treatments and remain legal.

Because of these restrictions, abortion pills and procedures cannot legally be provided in Louisiana.
