# Does Abortion Hurt?
**When it comes to abortion, there’s a lot of confusion out there.** It’s common to wonder, *“Do abortions hurt?”* It’s a valid question, and the answer isn’t the same for everyone. Pain depends on your body, your pain tolerance, and how far along the pregnancy is.

### Understanding Abortion Types: Chemical vs. Surgical
There are two main kinds of abortion: **chemical** and **surgical**.¹
- **Chemical abortion** (the abortion pill) uses medications like mifepristone and misoprostol. The FDA has approved this method up to **70 days from the first day of your last period**.²
- **Surgical abortion** is a procedure performed in a medical facility to remove pregnancy tissue. These are usually done after 10 weeks.³
## How Painful Are Abortions?
So, do abortions hurt?
The experience varies from woman to woman.
- With **medical abortion**, some describe it as cramping and bleeding similar to a heavy period, while others report more intense pain.
- With **surgical abortion**, anesthesia prevents pain during the procedure itself, but cramping or discomfort may follow.
